The Mubuku Washing Station is located on an 8-hectare plot of land on the banks of the Mubuku River in Kasese District. The river rises in the Upper Rwenzori ice caps and flows into Lake George. Along its route, it winds through fertile farmland on the eastern slopes of the Rwenzori range, passing through the resort of Kasese before joining Lake George and the African Great Lakes system.

The drier and warmer climate of the Mubuku washing station, combined with the presence of a quality control laboratory, provides an ideal environment to experiment with the natural anaerobic treatment. This configuration ensures uniform drying and consistent quality at every stage.

More than 4,300 farmers supply cherries to the Mubuku station. Farmers mainly grow the SL14 variety, often in combination with bananas, vanilla and beans to diversify their income.

The cherries are transported to the resort daily, often by steep and muddy dirt roads. Upon arrival, they are sorted by flotation and then meticulously sorted by hand by qualified personnel. They are then sealed in vats for 40 hours. After fermentation, the cherries are spreadout on raised beds where they stay for between 18 and 24 days.
