Located in the Chikmagalur Hills, Ratnagiri Estate is one of the most prestigious specialty coffee producers in India. The name "Ratnagiri" means "Pearl Mountain" in Hindi, referring to the shimmering silver canopy of oak trees that shade the plantation's coffee trees. Nestled in the heart of a thriving three-layered forest ecosystem, the estate is a true haven of biodiversity. More than 48 species of birds and many wild animals — monkeys, leopards, wild boars, tigers, mongooses and even elephants — call it home. This rich biodiversity is a testament to the Patre family's commitment to ecological harmony in all aspects of their farm.

Founded in 1920, the Ratnagiri estate has been passed down from generation to generation and is now owned and managed by Ashok Patre. A progressive farmer and avid traveller, Ashok incorporates international best practices into coffee growing in India, and is constantly experimenting to improve its quality. The Ratnagiri Estate is a biodynamic and organic farm, certified by the Rainforest Alliance. Quarterly soil testing and organic amendments ensure long-term soil health. To naturally boost the plants' immunity and increase the sugar content of coffee cherries, Ashok uses ionized seawater and seaweed extract.

With determination, he works closely with two microbiologists to monitor the fermentation parameters, resulting in coffees of exceptional purity and balance.

We are always on the lookout for the best coffees. We talk to each other. We share our ideas. We order. We roast. We infuse. We taste. We share our impressions. We re-roast... We've been doing this for almost ten years and this is just the beginning. There is no destination for this trip. The quest for the best coffee has become our profession and our way of life.
